UKAEA Group signs Armed Forces Covenent

The UKAEA group - comprising the UKAEA National Fusion Laboratory and UK Fusion Energy (UKFE) - has demonstrated its commitment to supporting UK military veterans, and their families by signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

UKAEA has become increasingly proactive in seeking to attract veterans into the fusion sector, recognising that the skills developed by individuals in the armed forces are transferrable into the fusion sector.

Mechanical and electrical skills, logistics and project management, and leadership and culture, are all traits that are in high demand and will be utilised across the fusion sector.

April 2026 marked the start of a new four-year delivery period for Joint European Torus (JET) Decommissioning and Repurposing (JDR), bringing a refresh in priorities for the team.

The team tasked with the decommissioning and repurposing of JET have already made significant progress, with completion of tasks such as the transitioning of JET from plasma operations into a shutdown state. This meant systems which could be turned off were identified, allowing for the saving of costs and making funds available for alternative uses.
