For UKAEA, hosting the conference marked the culmination of years of planning. Preparations began all the way back in 2022, with teams across the organisation working to deliver an event worthy of the plasma physics community’s flagship conference. UKAEA was also well represented in conference leadership, with Fernanda Rimini serving as Programme Committee Chair. The Local Organising Committee included colleagues from the Plasma Science and Fusion Operations Division and the Communications team.
The invited talks were presented by David Ryan and Daniel Kennedy. David presented First observation of RMP ELM Suppression in a Spherical Tokamak, highlighting a key scientific result from MAST Upgrade’s Fourth Experimental Campaign. Daniel’s presentation, The Transport Challenge for Fusion Power Plants at High Beta, explored the theory of how electromagnetic turbulence saturates in high-beta plasmas, and what causes that saturation to break.
The conference attracts a wide global audience. This year’s event welcomed 819 attendees from all over the world, this included significant attendance from China, Japan and the United States. 819 is believed to be the highest ever recorded attendance at an EPS Plasma Conference.
The European Physical Society (EPS) Plasma Physics Conference is the standout international event for plasma physics research. Held annually in a different host country, the conference brings together scientists to share the latest advances in the field. This year, UKAEA hosted and organised the prestigious event.
Taking place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre from 29 June to 3 July, the conference featured a packed programme of plenary, invited, oral and poster presentations, alongside a vibrant social programme that included a welcome reception, organised activities across Edinburgh and a gala dinner. The talks and presentations covered all areas of plasma physics, including:
