  • Available in a wider range of options to support different needs

  • Properly fitting for the individual, whatever that may look or feel like

We've been working directly with BSI, who have been a fantastic support in helping us understand what is out there.

What is BS 30417?

BS 30417 is a British Standard that provides practical guidance to make PPE more inclusive by ensuring it is:

Promoting Inclusive PPE
By Sherry White, Safety & Health Improvements Manager

How can you get involved?

We believe collaboration is the best way to learn. Whether you are well ahead, or just starting to think about inclusive PPE, we would love to hear from you.

What are we doing?

We are working with suppliers and our teams to improve awareness, access and choice. Our recent inclusive PPE expo brought strong engagement from staff and contractors, with conversations focused on:

  • Better fitting clothing, from hats to harnesses

  • Options for women and maternity fit

  • Customised solutions for individual needs

We are not supporting teams across the organisation to have open conversations about what people need, and how to access it.

Why it Matters

Anyone working in safety knows PPE is the last line of defence - but it only works if people can and will use it properly.

Inclusive PPE helps to:

  • Improve comfort and usability

  • Build confidence in and engagement with their work and the organisation

  • Demonstrates we live by our values

  • Support inclusion and a sense of belonging

When PPE fits properly and works how people need it to, people become intrinsically motivated to engage - and that matters.

As our workforce and environments evolve, so too must how we approach personal protected equipment (PPE).

We already have a wide range of options available - but we want to go further. The introduction of BS 30417 marks an important step forward.
