Electrical Manufacturing Engineer

How long have you worked at RACE?

I’ve worked for RACE since May 2020, as an Electrical Manufacturing Engineer. I started off my career with a two-year apprenticeship at another company, then a further 3 years as an electromechanical project technician. I then left and went to University where I gained a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which lead me onto my job at RACE.

How did you find out about the role?

I was subscribed to the E&T Magazine where they advertised an open day. I went along to it, had an informal interview and I was then invited back for a more formal interview.

What’s your role within the team?

As a Manufacturing Engineer I play a proactive role in finding and solving design issues as well as providing feedback on ways to improve a design. This both improves the quality of manufactured work but also reduces the cost associated to a project. As a secondary role I act in a reactive capacity. I feel it is important to have an onsite presence during the build phase of any project lifecycle. This has a couple of noticeable advantages. Any build problems that may arise can be delt with quickly and at the earliest opportunity, as well as providing technicians with support in areas of uncertainty.

You’ve been at RACE for a while now, what is it about the role that you have enjoyed most so far?

I can’t really say the social side at the moment because I’ve been at home! However, I think what I’ve found enjoyable so far is the diversity of the work, it’s quite varied and therefore interesting. There’s a lot of projects to get involved with, so I’ve never found myself out of work! There’s a lot of skills I’ve picked up in this job, with the chance to apply transferable skills from my previous work experience.

You joined during lockdown, how have you found it?

It was hard to start off with, but I’ve got to it. It was a bit strange starting off in a new company from home, I was living in North Wales to begin with, before moving down to Abingdon. I was then on site pretty much every day from that point up until Christmas.  The project I was made responsible for required a daily presence with a high level of practical based work. In 2021, the need for me to be on site reduced and I have since gone back to home working.
