Empowering Futures: Highlights from the 2024 UKAEA School Work Experience Programme

Education & Outreach Manager Nia John said:

“We had a seriously impressive intake of students this year. The skills and knowledge they displayed blew us away, and their enthusiasm was infectious! We hope to see a few of them back here working for UKAEA in the future, and some have already made enquiries about apprenticeships and other career opportunities with us.”

Student Olivier Mantel, who spent his week with the Fuel Cycle team, said:

“It was a fantastic opportunity and everybody I worked with was great. I learnt so much about fusion, in particular the fuel cycle. This helped me develop my understanding of the role

Noah Adeoye, who worked with Plasma Science & Fusion Operations, added:

“The work experience increased my interest in fusion energy and the exciting possibilities that come with UKAEA projects (STEP for example). The week working with you all has encouraged me to come and work alongside the world's best in order to bring sustainable fusion energy one step (no pun intended) closer.”

Each year UKAEA runs two sets of work experience placements for students in Years 10 and 11, who apply and pass an assessment day before being paired with a staff supervisor for their week at Culham Campus. Although most students are from the local area, this year some came from as far afield as Brighton.

The 2024 groups spent time working on real projects in areas ranging from robotics, plasmas and engineering design to finance, coding and materials. The projects were interspersed with tours and other group activities. At the end of the week, each presented their work and what they’d learned at a ‘closing ceremony’ attended by supervisors and scheme organisers.
