We're also looking ahead to the 2025 recruitment cycle and have already sent out internal communications to key stakeholders. In addition, we are working closely with the outreach and fusion skills teams to attend local events and open evenings to promote our upcoming opportunities. Furthermore, we’re preparing for National Apprenticeship Week in February, where we’ll highlight the diversity of our schemes and showcase success stories from our apprentices.

Why should people consider an apprenticeship at UKAEA?

UKAEA offers a wide variety of apprenticeships beyond science and engineering, including IT, project management, business administration, and even health physics and marketing. These apprenticeships range from Level 2 to Level 7, meaning there is something for everyone, whether you’re a school leaver or someone looking for a career change. What makes UKAEA unique is that apprentices get to balance work and study, earning while they learn. Our apprenticeship levy covers the cost of education, so there are no student loans, and apprentices benefit from hands-on experience, shadowing experts in their field.

How can people find out about the apprenticeship scheme?

For those interested in our apprenticeship schemes, more information is available on the UKAEA Early Careers website. The platform provides details about the schemes, upcoming recruitment, and testimonials from individuals who have completed the programmes. We also hold open evenings and events where prospective candidates can meet current apprentices and graduates to learn more about their experiences.

Do you have any advice for people who would like to apply?

The best advice I can offer is to think carefully about which apprenticeship programme aligns with your career goals, as we have such a wide variety to choose from. It’s important to note that apprenticeships at UKAEA aren’t limited by age—anyone can apply, whether you’re just starting your career or looking for a change. Can you tell us about the Early Careers team at UKAEA and your role in the team?

The Early Careers team at UKAEA is pivotal in supporting various career progression programmes, including graduate schemes, apprenticeships, and student placements. Our focus is on future-proofing UKAEA’s capability to meet the challenges of fusion research and technology. Currently, over 25% of the UKAEA workforce has either completed or is part of one of these programmes, including our own CEO, Ian Chapman, who was part of the graduate programme! My role as a Senior Early Careers Advisor focuses on the apprenticeship scheme, covering everything from recruitment to guidance, ensuring apprentices are supported throughout their journey. I’ve been in this role since March 2024, and it has been incredibly rewarding to watch the apprentices thrive.

Are there any campaigns you are currently working on?

Yes, September has been quite busy as we welcomed 39 new apprentices and 59 graduates into the programme. This year marks our largest apprenticeship intake ever, which is a fantastic achievement.

This month we had the pleasure of speaking with Jennifer Cleverly-Jones, Senior Early Careers Advisor at UKAEA, who shared her insights into the Early Careers team, the exciting campaigns they are working on, and the importance of UKAEA's apprenticeship programs. Read on to learn more about the apprenticeship schemes, why they are a fantastic opportunity, and how to get involved.
