UK and US fusion supercomputers to be linked across Atlantic

UKAEA and the United States Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have collaborated to combine their advanced fusion supercomputing platforms, benefitting from the implication of artificial intelligence to accelerate the development of fusion energy.

A Joint Declaration of Intent was signed between the two organisations, with intentions to explore linking UKAEA's SUNRISE AI supercomputer with PPPL's STELLAR-AI platform, through a partnership known as the SUNRISE-STELLAR-AI Federation.

This federation will enable researchers on both sides of the Atlantic to train AI models on results from both national laboratories, and further develop AI tools for future fusion power plants. Through combining supercomputer power and expertise, the federation aims to shorten the design cycle for future fusion power plants.
