In addition to these accomplishments, there are also efficiency gains and other benefits that have and will continue to be secured through the programme’s investment. These include around £2.5 million in efficiency savings from reusing existing assets and ongoing utility savings from solar energy management.
Ruth Elliot, the Programme’s Senior Responsible Owner, said:
“Fusion Foundations through its investment in infrastructure, facilities and skills has made a significant contribution to delivering UKAEA’s Mission. I would like to congratulate and thank everyone involved in this highly successful programme over the 5 years”
The programme has required collaboration from across UKAEA, evidence of how effectively the organisation can adapt and react to delivery during a challenging period of change. For Fusion Foundations this included Covid-19 and the Ukraine War impacting resource availability and supply lead time, alongside the rapid growth of UKAEA.
The programme will now formally close, with the team retain oversight of some final delivery phases.
Kristie Povey, a Project Manager who has been working with the core programme team since 2021, said:
“Working with the programme and wider colleagues has been a great experience; I was lucky to join UKAEA in 2021 and be actively involved in this programme of delivery. I’ve met many people with different backgrounds as part of stakeholder engagement and have great respect for the knowledge and commitment of these individuals across the Authority.”
The £200 million Fusion Foundations programme, running from 2020 to 2025, has been transformational in developing Culham Campus as well as generating important benefits away from the site. The impressive list of achievements from the 21 major projects focused on facilities, infrastructure and skills including the delivery of:
5 new buildings and 3 building extensions and a Fusion Energy Café near West Burton
3 new car parks providing 462 spaces, 93 additional EV charging points, and 168 cycle stands.
A thriving Fusion Cluster with 450 members
426 new apprentices enabled through OAS, Oxfordshire Advanced Skills
Investment in 14 Robotics Trials conducted for ITER
2 new hot cells placed into the MRF, (Materials Research Facility)
Transformed IT services including 95% wi-fi coverage on Campus, 2,500 refreshed desktops/laptops
