Work for a university and want to know how you can get involved? The FOSTER skills programme is now inviting UK universities to join this growing effort by offering a number of funded internships. For the first time, universities can contribute their projects to help shape the next generation of fusion professionals.
Deadline
The deadline for projects is 28th February 2025. Each university to confirm student selection 9th May 2025.
Why participate?
As a participating university, you will have the opportunity to:
Showcase your STEM-related research and projects to highly motivated undergraduates.
Strengthen your links with the fusion industry sector.
Support the development of essential skills in students while highlighting the academic and career opportunities available in fusion.
How the programme works?
The 2025 Summer Internship Programme is open to UK-based university undergraduates (students graduating after September of the placement year). Students will work on fusion-related projects over 8 weeks during the summer (June–August), covering a wide range of disciplines. While many projects are in STEM fields, there is also demand for support functions such as commercial strategy, finance, project management, and policy development.
In 2025, the programme offers £3,900 subsistence payment to students who secure placements.
What's in it for universities?
We currently have 32 projects from 12 fusion industry organisations but are keen to expand the programme by accepting university-led projects, which we fill fund with the £3,900 subsistence payment. As a university host, you can propose projects with significant relevance to the fusion sector in either STEM or non-STEM subjects.
Universities can submit project proposals here, they will then be notified if their project is accepted. Universities will recruit and manage the student placement process independently, ensuring the right match for your project needs.
