Teaching teachers to inspire the next generation

Inspiration begins in the classroom, and outreach to engage young people has long been an important focus for UK Atomic Energy Authority, with schools either receiving presentations or visiting Culham Campus each year.

UKAEA’s new programme, FOSTER (Fusion Opportunities in Skills, Training, Education, and Research), has objectives of widening and deepening the talent pool, increasing awareness of fusion careers, and developing a community and ecosystem across the fusion energy sector.

This is why FOSTER’s leadership, in collaboration with Tokamak Energy, First Light Fusion, educational charity The Ogden Trust, and UKAEA’s outreach team, recently held the first of a new series of fusion teachers’ conferences.

Welcoming attendees from across the UK, representing a potential outreach of nearly 4,400 students, the teachers conference included presentations, Q&A panels, interactive sessions, and a behind the scenes visit of Culham Campus to see some of UKAEA’s world-leading research in person.

Nick Walkden, Head of Fusion Skills at UKAEA and FOSTER’s Programme Director, said:

“I am delighted by the feedback we have received from teachers who attended the conference. The high demand for places at the conference shows that there is appetite to learn more about fusion and the opportunities within the sector.

“A collaborative approach across the entire fusion sector is essential to achieve goals such as increasing the amount of lesson time given to fusion-related topics in the curriculum.”
